@dualhammers

I like this quote:

By separating intellectual and physical labor the state took power away from both types of workers. The manual laborers could then only build what others had planned and the planners no longer had the capacity to build anything at all.

the real tragedy of the effort towards better handling of digital Arabic text is that even our loftiest goals are a compromise. most systems can't even do the super basic A in the first image correctly. few can pull off B, allowing letters to stack and bend, preserving some of the flourish and nuance of the script. the second image -- which is still text! -- is just not on the table. it's the kind of thing we're leaving behind to exist on computers.

The collective psychosis on display in MAGA-land bears a lot of resemblance to the mind-virus ideas of Snowcrash and the Individual-11 / Laughing Man Copycat arcs of Ghost in the Shell.

We're sinking deeper and deeper in to a cyberpunk dystopia, largely because the people running tech companies all loved Neuromancer but didn't read deeply enough between the lines.

It's only going to get weirder from here. Welcome to 2021.

@ajroach42 a depressingly large number of people think that computers (mobile devices included) "wear out" with age and use due to this phenomenon. The fact is that in the past 20 years or so that the reason the same computer is slower at doing the same tasks now compared to then is almost entirely due to surveillance and targeted marketing practices.

Even if you're not mining bitcoin literally most of the energy expended by most computers is driven by this BS.

Indigenous people from modern day Canada and Alaska invented the first sunglasses. The oldest pair known dates back to the year 1200. They work by limiting the amount of sunlight that hits your eyes, preventing snow blindness.

What's wrong with (modern) computing?

- Computers spy on us all the time
- Computers are insecure, while pretending not to to be.
- Computers enable new modes of rent seeking, further exasperated by shitty patents and worse laws
- Computers/the modern internet encourage behaviors which are bad for our mental health as individuals.
- Computers and the modern internet, in concert with modern capitalism have built a world essentially without public spaces.

You know, all that bullshit.

This is your occasional reminder that there is a character in Unicode that exists solely to encode the one time a monk doodled a little cluster of eyes in the middle of the phrase "manyꙮeyed seraphim".

I just published Moyō 模様, the collection of CSS patterns I gathered for my time tracking tool! :tealheart:

Now you too can use black and white patterns instead of colors like it's 1984. :cooldog: :mac:

If you don't know where to start take a look at the dedicated page on my wiki. #theWorkshop thomasorus.com/moyo.html
